The Qualities of Natural Stone - Which one is Right for You?

All natural stone tiles are beautiful for different reasons, and each type of natural stone has its own unique qualities. Part of the beauty of natural stone is the fact that each tile is different and their individuality should be celebrated. But it's important to pick stone tiles which are suitable for your needs; that's why it's vital to know the qualities of each type of stone and how it could work for you in your home.

Marble

Due to marble's distinctive crystalline structure it can be polished to a high gloss. The finish this creates is unparalleled in terms of high-class texture and appearance. You may find that marble stone tiles have contrasting veins and base colours, and these only add to their appearance rather than detract from it. It is, however, less durable than other types of natural stone, and is often more expensive, so you should think carefully before investing in marble.

Natural Stone Qualities

Travertine

Travertine is one of the Stone Gallery's favourite types of natural stone: a good all-rounder, it may not be as striking as other types of stone tiles, but equally, sometimes you don't want your natural stone to jump out at you. Travertine tones are predominantly beige and neutral colours, which give a wonderful homely feel. It's part of the limestone family, so it makes for durable stone flooring, but it can be susceptible to staining if not sealed properly.

Slate

Slate is an extremely versatile natural stone. It's hard wearing, and is suitable for both interior and exterior applications. As it's available in a variety of colours, it makes for a good accent installation, too; for example, you may choose a granite kitchen countertop, and slate wall tiles and stone flooring to complement the look.

Limestone

Limestone tiles bring a timeless look to any home, particularly when used in large formats as flagstone stone flooring. Limestone stone tiles often contain a number of characteristics, from calcite streaks or spots through to pit holes, honeycomb formations and even fossils and shell formations! It's a great type of natural stone for adding rustic character to any property.
