There's a common misconception that stone tiles are only suitable for the kitchen or bathroom, but that simply isn't the case. Natural stone can be used throughout the home and is suitable for all living spaces both inside and out. With a little imagination, and by using stone tiles in all living areas, you can be living a natural stone dream.
The French and Mediterranean countries have used natural stone flooring within bedrooms for many years. It has a classic, timeless feel – almost like living in castle quarters! Using classic flagstone tiles on the floor against natural stone tiles on the walls, or against exposed stone walls, will create a sumptuous, luxurious bedroom. And stone tiles needn't be cold either, as underfloor heating can keep tiled bedroom floors cosy and warm.
A grand staircase doesn't go unnoticed in a stylish hallway and is often the centrepiece of any entrance hall. So why not treat this high traffic area to a natural stone makeover? It's an excellent covering for thoroughfare areas as it's so hard wearing.
Stone tiles can be expertly cut and engineered to fit a staircase, so whether it is a standard straight up and down design, or a grand, sweeping circular stairway to heaven, you can find natural stone to suit your needs.
Just as natural stone is a wonderful material for bedrooms, stone flooring can also be used to great effect in the living room. Less is often more, so keep your stone flooring neutral with a traditional travertine or light coloured marble and use accessories to brighten a room; these light, airy floor tiles will make your room feel bigger.
Don't forget that if your living room opens out onto the garden, using the same stone tiles inside and out will create the infinity look which is so popular at the moment, bringing the outside indoors.
